Online Repository of Texts in the Field of Slavic Studies

The subject repository iReteslaw was established at the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences with the organisational support of The Slavic Foundation.

The aim is to disseminate knowledge about the broadly understood Slavic area and its cultural borderland as a field of research. The repository collects works in Slavic linguistics, cultural studies and related disciplines, including literary studies, history, ethnology and sociology. iReteslaw is conceived as an innovative, comparative and interdisciplinary source of materials provided with a set of metadata, serving to popularize the results of research in Slavic Studies and thus facilitate the exchange of scientific ideas between researchers in different centers and countries, and among people outside the scientific community and academia.

The repository consists of two communities. The community “Dokumenty slawistyczne [Slavic Studies Documents]” contains not only scholarly works deposited by their authors in the form of previously published books, articles, preprints or postprints, but also doctoral and habilitation dissertations, self-presentations, and materials from scholarly conferences. The community “Wydawnictwa Instytutu Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk [Publications of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences]” has been serving as the book publishing platform of the Publishing Department of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences since 2016.

All items in the repository are published in open access, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license (until the end of 2023 – under the CC BY 3.0 PL license). This means that they can be accessed free of charge by all users, including institutions. Users may read, download, copy, distribute, print and search the entire content of each document as well as publicize links to this content without seeking permission from either the publisher or the author(s).

Uzupełniają go prace publikowane przez wydawnictwo IS PAN do 2015 roku włącznie, które pierwotnie wydano drukiem i do których uzyskano odpowiednią licencję. W zbiorze prace deponuje wydawca. [ENG] Since 2016, the community “Wydawnictwa Instytutu Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk [Publications of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences]” has been serving as the book publishing platform of the Publishing Department of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. The community makes available, on an open access basis, books and chapters in edited volumes published by the Department, which since 2016 have appeared electronically (exclusively or simultaneously with a print edition). The community also includes some books published by the Department before 2016, which originally appeared in print, namely those where the publisher secured an appropriate license. The works are deposited in the community by the publisher.

Ghosts of Marx – Forgetting and Remembering Labor History and German Heritage in Czechia

Abstract: This article examines the dynamics of historical memory in the former German-speaking industrial center of Liberec/Reichenberg, Czechia, from the postwar period to the present. The analysis focuses on two sites: the pre-1989 tourist and public memory project, Path of the Labor Movement, which celebrated the city’s pre-war leftist traditions, and the former villa of a German-speaking entrepreneurial family, whose legacy became recognized after 1989. The article contests the prevailing view that German history in postwar Czechoslovakia was solely suppressed before 1989 and subsequently rediscovered. It demonstrates that the memory of the labor movement remained visible under socialism, as it corresponded with official memory politics. After 1989, this history diminished in public space, while the legacy of capitalist industrialization received increased attention. Utilizing the concept of hauntology, the article explores how different sites and layers of memory become visible or invisible in public space, further developing Jacques Derrida's idea of how the memory of the communist project generates affects and tensions.

Abstract: Książka to pierwszy zeszyt serii greckiej znanego od dziesięcioleci wydawnictwa źródłowego Instytutu Slawistyki PAN, „Testimonia najdawniejszych dziejów Słowian”. Zeszyt szósty i ostatni serii greckiej pt. „Pisarze wieku XI” autorstwa Anny Kotłowskiej ukazał się w 2013 roku. Niniejsza publikacja strukturalnie i merytorycznie nawiązuje do wydanego kilka lat temu pierwszego tomu serii łacińskiej „Testimoniów najdawniejszych dziejów Słowian” („Seria łacińska”. Tom 1: „Starożytność. Pisarze najdawniejsi”. Poznań–Warszawa 2016). Wiele haseł leksykonu łacińskiego zostało rozbudowanych o źródła greckie, zaktualizowano także ich bibliografię. Prezentowany tom składa się z dwóch części. Pierwsza to fragmenty (tekst oryginalny oraz tłumaczenie) kilkunastu dzieł z dziedziny geografii, etnografii i historiografii antycznej (m.in. pierwszy polski przekład wszystkich zachowanych fragmentów Pyteasza z Massalii oraz najobszerniejszy z dotychczasowych w języku polskim przekład fragmentów Geografii Ptolemeusza z Aleksandrii – pierwszy po przełomowej edycji szwajcarskiej z 2006 roku), opisujących terytoria Europy Środkowej, Wschodniej oraz Azji Środkowej. Ten ostatni obszar został uwzględniony ze względu na a) obraz wyobrażeń nauki klasycznej na temat Eurazji, mający wpływ na geografię europejską aż po wczesną nowożytność; b) jego kluczowe znaczenie w migracjach ludów koczowniczych przybywających do Europy Środkowej, Wschodniej i na Bałkany. Część druga tomu – znacznie obszerniejsza – to leksykon, na który składają się hasła objaśniające ponad tysiąc hydro-, topo- i etnonimów z przytoczonych źródeł. Zawierają one podstawowe poświadczenia źródłowe, możliwą lokalizację, współczesną identyfikację (nie zawsze możliwą, a często dyskusyjną!) oraz historię badań ostatnich 150 lat. Powiązana z leksykonem bardzo obszerna bibliografia drobiazgowo odzwierciedla dorobek nauki europejskiej i amerykańskiej w zakresie geografii klasycznej. Ze względu na swoją reprezentatywność pozwala ona na podjęcie własnych, szczegółowych badań. W historii poruszanej problematyki niektóre terminy wiązano ze Słowianami bądź z językami słowiańskimi, niemniej dla omawianego okresu chronologicznego ustalenia takie pozostają w większości sporne. Ze względu jednak na znany powszechnie fakt, iż historiografia i geografia średniowieczna wykazują ciągłość (semantyczną, mentalną, metodyczną itd.) z tradycją antyczną, wskazane jest, by także mediewistyka dysponowała zbiorczym opracowaniem wcześniejszego obrazu świata. Jest to zatem obszerne kompendium z zakresu geografii historycznej, wyjątkowe w polskiej literaturze przedmiotu.This book is volume one in the Greek series of the long-running edition of sources “Testimonia najdawniejszych dziejów Słowian” [Testimonia of the Earliest History of the Slavs], prepared at the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. The sixth and final volume of the series, “Pisarze wieku XI” [Authors of the Eleventh Century] by Anna Kotłowska, appeared in 2013. In terms of its structure and content-related issues, the present publication draws on the first volume of the Latin series of “Testimonia” (“Seria łacińska” [Latin Series], vol. 1: “Starożytność. Pisarze najdawniejsi” [Antiquity: Earliest Authors], 2016). A number of entries from the lexicon in the Latin volume have been expanded to include Greek sources, and the bibliography has been updated. The present volume consists of two parts. The first contains excerpts (original text and translation) from over a dozen works of ancient geography, ethnography and historiography which describe the areas of central and eastern Europe and central Asia (e.g. the first Polish translation of all surviving fragments of Pytheas of Massalia; the most extensive Polish translation of fragments of Ptolemy’s Geography, the first since the landmark Swiss edition of 2006). Central Asia is included owing to (a) the image of Eurasia in classical scholarship, which influenced European geography until the early modern period; (b) its crucial importance in the migrations of nomadic peoples arriving in central and eastern Europe and the Balkans. The second and much more extensive part of the volume is a lexicon containing entries which explain over a thousand hydro-, topo- and ethnonyms from the sources. The entries provide basic details of their attestations in sources, possible location, present-day identification (not always possible and often debatable), and a history of research over the last 150 years. The extensive and wide-ranging bibliography associated with the lexicon provides a thorough record of achievements of European and American scholarship in the field of classical geography, and thus makes it possible for researchers to undertake their own detailed studies. Although throughout the history of writing on the issues in focus certain terms have been associated with Slavs or Slavic languages, for the chronological period under discussion such attributions remain largely disputed. However, given the well-known fact that medieval historiography and geography exhibit continuity with the ancient tradition (in semantic, mental, methodological and other terms), it is advisable that medieval studies should also have a comprehensive account of the earlier worldview. The present volume is an extensive compendium in the field of historical geography and is unique in the Polish literature on the subject.

Abstract: The book is the result of a research project titled “The Topos of an Immured Woman in the Cultures of Southeastern Europe and Hungary”, funded by the National Science Centre [NCN] (2020/37/B/HS2/00152). It focuses on the adaptation of the wandering folk topos of the walled-up woman, which has spread from the oral tradition of Southeastern Europe and Hungary into the modern and postmodern national cultures of this area. The research team was primarily interested in the transformations of this fragment of European folklore in modern national literatures and art from the 19th to the 21st century, in theater, film, performance, popular culture and education. This monograph presents the results of this original exploration and interpretation of cultural resources generated around the topos of the walled-up woman throughout the entire area under consideration: in Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Greek, Macedonian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovenian and Hungarian cultures. The book is the most comprehensive and insightful compendium of knowledge on the subject on a global scale. Its message goes beyond the history of one popular wandering motif – it is an essential voice in the debate on the condition of women in the world.

Abstract: Monografia prezentuje wyniki badań nad żywotnością etnolingwistyczną (ELV) wspólnot posługujących się językami kolateralnymi w Polsce: kaszubskiej, śląskiej, góralskiej, podlaskiej i mazurskiej. Języki kolateralne należą do tej samej rodziny językowej co język dominujący i często uważane są za jego dialekty, co wpływa na ich status, postawy wobec nich i towarzyszące im ideologie językowe. To z kolei przekłada się na doświadczenia związane z ich używaniem, praktyki językowe oraz transmisję. Dlatego ELV ukazano jako dynamiczny proces, w którym różne czynniki oddziałują na siebie nawzajem, osłabiając bądź wzmacniając wspólnotę językową. Model ELV został stworzony na podstawie badań krytycznej socjolingwistyki zajmującej się językami zagrożonymi. Poza zmiennymi obserwowalnymi (transmisją międzypokoleniową oraz kompetencjami językowymi) z pomocą metod badań psychometrycznych zidentyfikowano zmienne ukryte, do których należą: tożsamość zbiorowa, jej charakter i relacja z językiem; ideologie; postawy oraz doświadczenia i praktyki językowe. Zmienne te poddano analizie zarówno w kontekście badań statystycznych, jak i jakościowych, przeprowadzonych metodami etnograficznymi w każdym z pięciu regionów.The monograph presents the results of research on the ethnolinguistic vitality (ELV) of communities using collateral languages in Poland: Kashubian, Silesian, Podhalanian, Podlachian, and Masurian. Collateral languages belong to the same language family as the dominant language and are often considered its dialects, which affects their status, attitudes towards them, and accompanying language ideologies. This, in turn, translates into experiences related to their use, language practices, and transmission. Therefore, ELV is presented as a dynamic process in which various factors interact with each other, weakening or strengthening the language community. The ELV model was developed on the basis of critical sociolinguistic research on endangered languages. In addition to observable variables (intergenerational transmission and language competence), psychometric research methods were used to identify latent variables, including collective identity, its nature and relationship to language; ideologies; attitudes and language experiences and practices. These variables were analysed in the context of both statistical and qualitative research conducted using ethnographic methods in each of the five regions.

Abstract: Publikacja jest kontynuacją rozważań zawartych w pracach „Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe” (2018) oraz „Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe. Część 2” (2021). Autorzy szczególną uwagę zwracają na rozróżnienie rzeczywistych pożyczek od reliktów dawnej wspólnoty słowiańskiej. Wskazują także na konieczność zestawiania materiału polskiego i innojęzycznego (np. polskiego i ukraińskiego, polskiego i białoruskiego), by właściwie uchwycić mechanizmy przenikania elementów poszczególnych systemów, a przy tym zaobserwować infiltrację pierwiastków kulturowych składających się na całość obrazu pogranicza. W monografii omówiono kilkanaście wyrazów charakterystycznych dla tego obszaru. Są to: binduga, chaszcze, chudoba, chusta, druh, (h)uzer, kidać, kołosza, kurdupel, łukno, makutra, miękiny, nawleczka, niewiasta, prymak, tołkanica, żmykać. Zanalizowano je na tle kontekstów literackich i kulturowych.This publication continues reflections presented in the volumes "Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe" [The Polish-East Slavic Borderland: Word Studies] (2018) and "Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe. Część 2" [The Polish-East Slavic Borderland: Word Studies: Part 2] (2021). The authors pay particular attention to distinguishing actual borrowings from relics of the former Slavic community. They also accentuate the need to compare Polish and non-Polish material (e.g. Polish and Ukrainian, Polish and Belarusian) in order to capture properly the mechanisms of interpenetration of elements of particular systems and at the same time observe the infiltration of cultural elements which make up the overall image of the borderland. The volume offers a discussion of over a dozen words characteristic of this area: binduga ‘rafting ground’; chaszcze ‘thicket’; chudoba ‘livestock’; chusta ‘piece of linen or other fabric for clothing’; druh ‘companion; friend’; (h)uzer ‘lower part of a sheaf’; kidać ‘to throw’; kołosza ‘trouser leg’; kurdupel ‘short person’; łukno ‘vessel for honey; measure of honey’; makutra ‘clay bowl for grinding poppy seeds’; miękiny ‘chaff’; nawleczka ‘pillowcase, duvet cover; furniture cover’; niewiasta ‘daughter-in-law’; prymak ‘son-in-law accepted into his wife’s household’; tołkanica ‘mashed potatoes’; żmykać ‘to wash clothes by hand’.
