Online Repository of Texts in the Field of Slavic Studies

The subject repository iReteslaw was established at the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences with the organisational support of The Slavic Foundation.

The aim is to disseminate knowledge about the broadly understood Slavic area and its cultural borderland as a field of research. The repository collects works in Slavic linguistics, cultural studies and related disciplines, including literary studies, history, ethnology and sociology. iReteslaw is conceived as an innovative, comparative and interdisciplinary source of materials provided with a set of metadata, serving to popularise the results of research in Slavic Studies and thus facilitate the exchange of scientific ideas between researchers in different centres and countries, and among people outside the scientific community and academia.

The repository consists of two communities. The community “Dokumenty slawistyczne [Slavic Studies Documents]” contains not only scholarly works deposited by their authors in the form of previously published books, articles, preprints or postprints, but also doctoral and habilitation dissertations, self-presentations, and materials from scholarly conferences. The community “Wydawnictwa Instytutu Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk [Publications of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences]” has been serving as the book publishing platform of the Publishing Department of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences since 2016.

All items in the repository are published in open access, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence (until the end of 2023 – under the CC BY 3.0 PL licence). This means that they can be accessed free of charge by all users, including institutions. Users may read, download, copy, distribute, print and search the entire content of each document as well as publicize links to this content without seeking permission from either the publisher or the author(s).

Uzupełniają go prace publikowane przez wydawnictwo IS PAN do 2015 roku włącznie, które pierwotnie wydano drukiem i do których uzyskano odpowiednią licencję. W zbiorze prace deponuje wydawca. [ENG] Since 2016, the community “Wydawnictwa Instytutu Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk [Publications of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences]” has been serving as the book publishing platform of the Publishing Department of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. The community makes available, on an open access basis, books and chapters in edited volumes published by the Department, which since 2016 have appeared electronically (exclusively or simultaneously with a print edition). The community also includes some books published by the Department before 2016, which originally appeared in print, namely those where the publisher secured an appropriate licence. The works are deposited in the community by the publisher.

    Abstract: Monografia prezentuje wyniki badań nad żywotnością etnolingwistyczną (ELV) wspólnot posługujących się językami kolateralnymi w Polsce: kaszubskiej, śląskiej, góralskiej, podlaskiej i mazurskiej. Języki kolateralne należą do tej samej rodziny językowej co język dominujący i często uważane są za jego dialekty, co wpływa na ich status, postawy wobec nich i towarzyszące im ideologie językowe. To z kolei przekłada się na doświadczenia związane z ich używaniem, praktyki językowe oraz transmisję. Dlatego ELV ukazano jako dynamiczny proces, w którym różne czynniki oddziałują na siebie nawzajem, osłabiając bądź wzmacniając wspólnotę językową. Model ELV został stworzony na podstawie badań krytycznej socjolingwistyki zajmującej się językami zagrożonymi. Poza zmiennymi obserwowalnymi (transmisją międzypokoleniową oraz kompetencjami językowymi) z pomocą metod badań psychometrycznych zidentyfikowano zmienne ukryte, do których należą: tożsamość zbiorowa, jej charakter i relacja z językiem; ideologie; postawy oraz doświadczenia i praktyki językowe. Zmienne te poddano analizie zarówno w kontekście badań statystycznych, jak i jakościowych, przeprowadzonych metodami etnograficznymi w każdym z pięciu regionów.The monograph presents the results of research on the ethnolinguistic vitality (ELV) of communities using collateral languages in Poland: Kashubian, Silesian, Podhalanian, Podlachian, and Masurian. Collateral languages belong to the same language family as the dominant language and are often considered its dialects, which affects their status, attitudes towards them, and accompanying language ideologies. This, in turn, translates into experiences related to their use, language practices, and transmission. Therefore, ELV is presented as a dynamic process in which various factors interact with each other, weakening or strengthening the language community. The ELV model was developed on the basis of critical sociolinguistic research on endangered languages. In addition to observable variables (intergenerational transmission and language competence), psychometric research methods were used to identify latent variables, including collective identity, its nature and relationship to language; ideologies; attitudes and language experiences and practices. These variables were analysed in the context of both statistical and qualitative research conducted using ethnographic methods in each of the five regions.

    Abstract: Publikacja jest kontynuacją rozważań zawartych w pracach „Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe” (2018) oraz „Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe. Część 2” (2021). Autorzy szczególną uwagę zwracają na rozróżnienie rzeczywistych pożyczek od reliktów dawnej wspólnoty słowiańskiej. Wskazują także na konieczność zestawiania materiału polskiego i innojęzycznego (np. polskiego i ukraińskiego, polskiego i białoruskiego), by właściwie uchwycić mechanizmy przenikania elementów poszczególnych systemów, a przy tym zaobserwować infiltrację pierwiastków kulturowych składających się na całość obrazu pogranicza. W monografii omówiono kilkanaście wyrazów charakterystycznych dla tego obszaru. Są to: binduga, chaszcze, chudoba, chusta, druh, (h)uzer, kidać, kołosza, kurdupel, łukno, makutra, miękiny, nawleczka, niewiasta, prymak, tołkanica, żmykać. Zanalizowano je na tle kontekstów literackich i kulturowych.This publication continues reflections presented in the volumes "Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe" [The Polish-East Slavic Borderland: Word Studies] (2018) and "Pogranicze polsko-wschodniosłowianskie. Studia wyrazowe. Część 2" [The Polish-East Slavic Borderland: Word Studies: Part 2] (2021). The authors pay particular attention to distinguishing actual borrowings from relics of the former Slavic community. They also accentuate the need to compare Polish and non-Polish material (e.g. Polish and Ukrainian, Polish and Belarusian) in order to capture properly the mechanisms of interpenetration of elements of particular systems and at the same time observe the infiltration of cultural elements which make up the overall image of the borderland. The volume offers a discussion of over a dozen words characteristic of this area: binduga ‘rafting ground’; chaszcze ‘thicket’; chudoba ‘livestock’; chusta ‘piece of linen or other fabric for clothing’; druh ‘companion; friend’; (h)uzer ‘lower part of a sheaf’; kidać ‘to throw’; kołosza ‘trouser leg’; kurdupel ‘short person’; łukno ‘vessel for honey; measure of honey’; makutra ‘clay bowl for grinding poppy seeds’; miękiny ‘chaff’; nawleczka ‘pillowcase, duvet cover; furniture cover’; niewiasta ‘daughter-in-law’; prymak ‘son-in-law accepted into his wife’s household’; tołkanica ‘mashed potatoes’; żmykać ‘to wash clothes by hand’. The lexical items in focus are analysed against the backdrop of literary and cultural contexts.
