“Passing by, Leaving Behind...”: Notes on Parallel Semantic Developments in Selected Slavic Languages

Abstract

L’autrice analizza il processo di mutamento semantico (grammaticalizzazione) della preposizione polacca mimo (e dei suoi equivalenti in altre lingue slave), mostrando come essa si sia evoluta da un significato spaziale concreto («passare accanto») alla funzione astratta di congiunzione concessiva (pol. pomimo).
The author analyzes the process of semantic change (grammaticalization) of the Polish preposition “mimo” (and its counterparts in other Slavic languages), demonstrating how it evolved from a concrete spatial meaning (“passing by”) to the abstract function of a concessive conjunction (Pol. “pomimo”).
