This study is the first attempt in Poland to analyse the entire work of Václav Havel. It offers an in-depth presentation of this figure, emphasising the significant influence that he and his family had on the history of Czechoslovakia, Czech culture and intellectual life. In doing so, it also considers Havel’s philosophical thought contained in his dramatic works and his essays. The study presents the originality of the Czech variant of the new trend in post-war dramaturgy called “the theatre of the absurd”, a concept introduced by Martin Esslin. The author shows how Havel’s dramatic works add the dimension of human experience behind the Iron Curtain to the existential perspective of Western dramatists. She also discusses the evolution of the laywright’s workshop in the context of his involvement in the struggle with the totalitarianism of the twentieth century, examines the usefulness of the tools for describing reality proposed by the theatre of the absurd under the conditions of a police state, and reflects on the influence of dissident experience on the formation of ethical attitudes expressed in literary works, but also in social life. The study analyses the figure of Havel in the context of historical events which affected him and his family, and considers their influence on his attitude towards communist ideology, and, consequently, his role in the overthrow of the system. The analysis also reflects on the mechanisms of defamation used in socialist and capitalist times. It makes an attempt to answer the question about the sources of Havel’s ethical attitude and the social and psychological reasons for numerous attempts to discredit him in public, both in totalitarian and post-totalitarian times. Václav Havel’s plays require interpretative keys, without which their reading will not bring the desired effect – it will not be possible to decode the clues and meanings encoded in them by the author. This study provides such keys to the recipient. The analysis of his works uses the key of ethical nterpretation, proposed both by the author and theoreticians of the theatre of the absurd, thanks to which the plays in focus can be read from the perspective of universal experiences. The present study takes a novel approach: it is the first one to analyse in detail the entirety of Havel’s dramatic output and its categorisation as the theatre of the absurd. It also analyses possible interpretative paths of his plays, considering both heir theatrical productions and the potential of the text. It points to the evolution of recurring motifs, proving that Havel’s plays constitute a well-thought-out whole and can provide an insight into the spiritual changes of twentieth-century society. Moreover, the study considers and interprets all stage productions of his plays in Poland, reflecting on the character of the Polish and Czech theatrical imaginary and pointing to the differences between them. In doing so, it argues that his dramatic works have been absorbed very superficially in Poland and, for the most part, did not go beyond the stereotypes about Czech literature, which means that in fact we are dealing with a false Polish reception of his oeuvre. The study includes footnotes, appendices (a list of Václav Havel’s plays and their Polish translations, a list of their Polish productions, a timeline of his life and work) and a bibliography.eng
