Od 2021 roku seria jest indeksowana w bazie SCOPUS.Appearing since 1977, the series Prace Slawistyczne. Slavica [Monographs in Slavic Studies. Slavica] is the longest-running series of the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, initially published by the Ossoliński National Institute (Ossolineum), and then since 1991 by the newly-established ISS PAS publishing house (SOW). The series brings together monographs predominantly in linguistics but also in literary studies. 157 volumes appeared between 1977 and 2025. Pomysł opracowania źródeł do najdawniejszych dziejów Słowian narodził się w trakcie prac nad „Słownikiem starożytności słowiańskich”. Stanowią zbiór ekscerptów z dzieł autorów greckich/bizantyńskich („Seria grecka”) i łacińskich („Seria łacińska”), opisujących różne aspekty dawnych społeczeństw słowiańskich, opartych na najlepszych edycjach krytycznych. Każdy tekst jest publikowany w języku oryginału z polskim przekładem. Ekscerpty są poprzedzone wstępem krytycznym przedstawiającym autora źródła albo środowisko jego powstania oraz opatrzone wyczerpującymi komentarzami rzeczowymi. „Serię łacińską” otwiera tom poświęcony źródłom starożytnym, opublikowany w 2016 roku.“Testimonia najdawniejszych dziejów Słowian” [Testimonies of the Earliest History of the Slavs], as an editorial project, has been pursued at the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences for almost fifty years. The idea of a collection of the earliest source texts concerning the Slavs was born in the course of work on “Słownik starożytności słowiańskich” [A Lexicon of Slavic Antiquities]. The project was conceived as a collection of excerpts from writings by Greek/Byzantine (“Greek Series”) and Latin (“Latin Series”) authors describing different aspects of early Slavic societies (basing on the best critical editions). Each text is published both in the original language version and in Polish translation; the excerpts are accompanied by critical introductions presenting their authors or the milieu of their origin, and by extensive historical comments. The “Latin Series” opens with a volume devoted to ancient sources, published in 2016.Series, quae “Testimonia veterum historiae Slavorum” inscribitur, per circa quinquaginta annos praeparata est in Instituto Slavisticae Academiae Scientiarum Polonicae. Idea fontium praeparandi ad vetustissimam historiam Slavorum spectantium nata est inter labores super “Lexiconem Antiquitatis Slavorum”. Series est collectio nostra excerptorum ex operibus auctorum Graecorum nec non Byzantinorum (series Graeca) vel Latinorum (series Latina), qui varias quaestiones vitae socialis societatum Slavorum vetustissimorum descripserunt, utendo editiones criticas optimas. Quilibet textus in lingua originali publicatus est cum translatione Polonica, commentariis exhaustis instructus (inter alia introductio, quae auctorem fontis, originemquem eius valde tractat). Series Latina initiata est cum volumine, quod fontibus Antiquibus devotum est et in Anno 2016 est publicatum.

Abstract

Niniejsza praca jest kolejną częścią serii wydawniczej „Testimonia najdawniejszych dziejów Słowian” przygotowywanej od blisko pięćdziesięciu lat w Instytucie Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Tym razem przedstawiamy informacje o Słowianach zawarte w średniowiecznych źródłach węgierskich. Ze względu na wagę stosunków polsko-węgierskich i tradycyjne nici sympatii, jakie łączą po dziś dzień oba społeczeństwa, zdecydowaliśmy się rozszerzyć nasz kwestionariusz badawczy. Obok wiadomości o Słowianach pokazujemy także wyobrażenie średniowiecznych Węgrów o ich przeszłości, obszerne fragmenty dotyczące nie tylko wojen domowych o władzę toczących się na Węgrzech po śmierci pierwszego koronowanego władcy tego kraju, Stefana I Świętego, w których wzięli udział słowiańscy sąsiedzi Królestwa, lecz również węgierskich interwencji w krajach dziś określanych jako słowiańskie. Materiał źródłowy podawany w formie ekscerptów w wersji oryginalnej z równoległym tłumaczeniem polskim dzielimy na dwie części: dziejopisarstwo oraz hagiografię. Nowością jest zamieszczenie „Kroniki węgiersko-polskiej” w obu jej redakcjach w dziale hagiograficznym, co być może pozwoli na zobaczenie tego dzieła w nowym, nieoczywistym kontekście. Tom źródłowy kończy pierwsze polskie tłumaczenie pierwszego ciągłego tekstu węgierskiego – „Halotti beszéd és könyörgés” [Mowy pogrzebowej i błagania]. W osobnym tomie zamieszczamy komentarze w postaci leksykonu, w którym objaśniamy postaci, miejsca i inne nazwy topograficzne oraz wybrane terminy ustrojowe z dziejów Węgier, nawiązując tym samym do badawczych tradycji zespołu, który przygotował niniejszy tom – tradycji „Słownika starożytności słowiańskich”.
This work is part of the series “Testimonia najdawniejszych dziejów Słowian” [Testimonies of the Earliest History of the Slavs], an editorial project pursued at the Institute of Slavic Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences for almost fifty years. This instalment presents information about the Slavs contained in medieval Hungarian sources. Considering the importance of Polish-Hungarian relations and the tradition of friendship between the two countries and their peoples, which is alive to this day, we decided to expand the scope of our research. Apart from records about the Slavs, we also present the idea of medieval Hungarians about their past, as well as extensive passages concerning not only the civil wars in Hungary after the death of the first crowned ruler of the country, Stephen I (St Stephen), in which the Slavic neighbours were involved, but also the Hungarian interventions in countries referred to as Slavic today. The excerpts from sources appear in the original version with a parallel Polish translation and come in two sections: historiography and hagiography. One novelty is that the “Hungarian-Polish Chronicle” (in both redactions) appears in the hagiography section, which may allow us to see it in a new, and unobvious, context. The final item in the volume of sources is the first Polish translation of the oldest continuous text in Hungarian: “Halotti beszéd és könyörgés” [Funeral Sermon and Prayer]. A separate volume contains a commentary to the excerpted sources: a lexicon which provides information about historical figures, place names and other toponyms as well as selected political terms from the history of Hungary. In this way, we draw on the research traditions of the team that prepared this work – the traditions of “Słownik starożytności słowiańskich” [Lexicon of Slavic Antiquities].

In hoc volumine textus de Slaviis ex fontibus Hungaribus medievalibus tractatae sunt. Collectio quaestionum nostrum amplificata est respectu significationis relationum Polonico-Hungaricarum et amicitiae traditionalis, quae ambas societates iungit usque ad praesentem diem. Praeter informationes de Slavis praesentamus descriptiones imaginationum Hungarorum medievalium de origine praeteritoque ipsorum, nec non excerptas amplificas non solum de bellis civilibus super potestatem in Hungaria post mortem primi regis coronati Hungariae, Sancti Stephani sive Stephani I Sancti, in quibus vicini Slavi participerant, sed etiam descriptiones interventionum Hungaricarum in ducatibus et regnibus, quae hodie in civitatibus Slavicis concluduntur. Omnia excerpta, quae in lingua originali praesentatae sunt et translatione Polonica instructa, in duas partes dividuntur: historiographiam et hagiographiam. Res nova est, ut Chronicam Hungarico-Polonicam cum duabus redactionibus in partem hagiographicam edamus, quod potest fontem istam in novum contextum interpretativum incertum videre. Tomus finitur cum prima translatione Polonica veterrimi textus sermone Hungarico continui quod “Halotti beszéd és könyörgés” id est “Sermo funeralis et oratio” inscribitur. In tomo altero separato commentaria in forma lexiconis publicamus, in quibus personas, loca et alia verba significantia, quae ad historiam Hungariae pertinent, explicamus. Labore illo ad traditionem institutionalem nostrae communitatis scientificae alligamus, quae in editione fundamentali “Lexiconis Antiquitatis Sclavorum” radicata est.
