Differentia specifica serii stanowi jej interdyscyplinarność: autorami „Kultury na Pograniczach” są historycy, antropolodzy społeczno-kulturowi, socjolodzy, językoznawcy, kulturoznawcy i literaturoznawcy. W latach 2005–2025 ukazało się 19 tomów serii.The works published, since 2005, in the Kultura na Pograniczach [Borderland Cultures] series present results of newest research on the issues of collective identities forming in the conditions of intercultural contact. The problems of cultural borderlands, nationalisms, collective representations and ideas, and discourses are approached by the authors from historical (medieval to contemporary) and geo-cultural (Polish and Slavic cultures against a European background) perspectives. Władysław Kowalenko (1884–1966): A Historian of the Early Slavs on Land and on the Sea

Abstract

Zasadniczym celem monografii jest ukazanie postaci Władysława Kowalenki jako prekursora badań nad osadnictwem grodowym przy wykorzystaniu metod interdyscyplinarnych i nad związkami wczesnośredniowiecznej Słowiańszczyzny z morzem, a zarazem wkładu tego badacza w powstanie jedynego kompendium wiedzy o dziejach i kulturze dawnych Słowian, jakim jest jest „Słownik starożytności słowiańskich”. To za sprawą prac redakcyjnych Kowalenki „Słownik” z pierwotnie zakładanego popularnego, dwutomowego wydawnictwa rozrósł się do rozmiarów ośmiotomowej encyklopedii.
The aim of this work is to present the role of Władysław Kowalenko as an initiator and advocate of research on early Piast strongholds with the use of interdisciplinary methods and of studies on connections between the early medieval Slavdom and the sea, as well as his contribution to the “Słownik starożytności słowiańskich” [Dictionary of Slavic Antiquities] – a unique compendium of knowledge about the history and culture of the early Slavs – where the editorial work of Kowalenko resulted in the publishing of an eight-volume encyclopaedia instead of the originally planned two-volume dictionary for the general public.
