Phraseology of the Russian Dialect of the Old Believers Living in Poland

Abstract

The aim of this book is to analyse the multilingual phraseological material recorded in the speech of the Old Believers living in Poland. The main task set by the author is to determine the possible origin of individual phraseological units, i.e. to identify which language the units were most likely taken from: Russian, Polish, Belarusian, German or Lithuanian. The units recorded were also analysed in terms of their semantics and structure. The results of the study indicate that the dialect of the Old Believers, despite the presence of foreign elements, has preserved a relatively rich stock of native Russian phraseology, but the units in question function mainly in the speech of representatives of the older generation. An analysis of the changes that have been taking place in recent years makes it possible to conclude that the Polish language is gradually replacing the Russian dialect in practically every sphere of communication (this applies particularly to lexical and phraseological resources).
