Abstract
Książka rekonstruuje proces wynajdywania rasy u zarania kształtowania się nauk o człowieku i namysłu nad jego zróżnicowaniem w polskiej refleksji teoretycznej i pozanaukowej od połowy XVIII w. do 1863 roku. Jednym z celów jest uzupełnienie luki w literaturze przedmiotu związanej z najwcześniejszym etapem rozważań o różnicy rasowej w narracjach polskich – silnie zakotwiczonych w przestrzeni prężnie rozwijającej się wczesnej antropologii na Zachodzie. Przedstawiciele historii naturalnej, ale i reprezentanci szeroko rozumianej humanistyki (historycy, językoznawcy, literaturoznawcy itp.) z różnych ośrodków naukowych i intelektualnych u schyłku i po upadku Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów konstruowali nowe wyobrażenia podziału świata ludzkiego na podstawie fizycznych i kulturowych odrębności między społecznościami. Obowiązujący model nauki sprowadzał się do porządkowania, klasyfikowania i budowania wartościujących hierarchii, a nieliczne głosy krytyczne, głównie spoza środowiska naukowego, nikły w dominującym przekazie. Spierano się o to, która z typologii rasowych dokładniej odwzorowuje rzeczywistość. Ówczesny stan wiedzy z zakresu nauk biologicznych nie wystarczył do obalenia teorii o istnieniu – wyodrębnionych na podstawie wrodzonych cech – odmian, z których miał się składać gatunek, a oświeceniowy dogmat o wspólnej naturze ludzkiej niezależnej od koloru skóry i różnic anatomicznych nie wstrzymał podziałów na rasy lepsze i gorsze.This book reconstructs the process of inventing race in the early days of the development of human sciences and thought on the diversity of humans in Polish theoretical and non-scientific reflection – from the mid-eighteenth century to 1863. One of the aims is to fill a gap in the literature concerning the earliest stage of considerations about racial difference in Polish narratives, strongly anchored in the dynamically developing early anthropology in the West. In the period of decline of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and after its fall, not only natural historians but also representatives of the broadly understood humanities (historians, linguists, literary scholars, etc.) from various academic and intellectual centres constructed new ideas of the division of the human world based on physical and cultural distinctions between communities. The prevailing model of science was limited to ordering, classifying and constructing evaluative hierarchies, and the few critical voices, mainly from outside the scientific community, were lost in the dominant message. There were disputes about which racial typology more accurately reflected reality. The state of knowledge in the field of biological sciences was insufficient to refute theories about the existence of human varieties (distinguished on the basis of innate characteristics), and the Enlightenment dogma of a common human nature, independent of skin colour and anatomical differences, did not prevent the divisions into better and worse races.
